I-65 CORRIDOR IMPROVEMENT PLAN
This page details the improvement projects for I-65. Most of the projects include widening the interstate, pavement rehabilitation and interchange construction.
Interstate 65 is the main artery for most of the state of Indiana. Serving Indianapolis and traveling to large metropolitan areas like Chicago and Louisville, this road has a very high amount of traffic. During peak congestion periods traffic along this route can slow significantly. In more rural areas this translates to a 20mph drop in travel speeds below posted speeds. and stop and go traffic in urban areas.
ADDED TRAVEL LANES I-865 TO SOUTH LEBANON (EXIT 138)
Constructed one lane each direction from I-865 north to south of Exit 138 (South Lebanon Exit) Included in this project is the reconstruction of several bridges and the replaement of the SR 267 overpass. This project is now complete.
ADDED TRAVEL LANES SOUTH LEBANON (EXIT 138) TO US-52 (LEBANON)
Will add one lane each direction from just south of Exit 138 (South Lebanon Exit) to the SR-32 junction in Lebanon. Included in this project is the reconstruction of the SR-39 intrchange replacement of the Railroad overpass located over I-65 just west of the SR-39 interchange. Other connecting roads may be upgraded or rerouted. The left-hand Offramp to Lafayette Ave from SB I-65 will be permanently closed.
Also in conjunction with this project the city of lebanon is planning to construct it's gateway project at Indianapolis Ave (Exit 138) and S Lebanon Street (Exit 139)
MARION/JOHNSON COUNTY WIDENING AND OPERATIONAL IMPROVEMENTS
This project will add travel lanes from I465 to Whiteland Road, as well as improve interchanges at Southport Road, County Line Road, Main Street, and Whiteland Road. Unfortunately there are limited details on this project as to the location of the added lanes. We hope to bring more info on the project in the future.
I-65 109TH STREET INTERCHANGE - CROWN POINT
The purpose of this project was to construct a new diamond interchnage at I-65, this project is complete and opened to traffic in October 2010.
I-65 NORTHWEST INDIANA WIDENING; US-30 to IN-2 NEAR HEBRON
The purpose of this project is to widen the interstate to 6 lanes from just south of US-30 to State Road 2 near. Unfortunately there are limited details on this project as to the location of the added lanes. We hope to bring more info on the project in the future.
I-65/I-465 INTERCHANGE RECONSTRUCTION
The purpose of this project is to modify the existing multiplex interchange at I465 to add additional lanes to ramps. Unfortunately there are limited details on this project as to the location of the added lanes. We hope to bring more info on the project in the future.
CLARK COUNTY WIDENING
Added Travel Lanes, one Interchange modification and two overhead bridges. Unfortunately there are limited details on this project as to the location of the added lanes. We hope to bring more info on the project in the future.
I-65 OHIO RIVER BRIDGES
Will construct a new bridge across the Ohio River near Louisville, KY. Reconstruction of all bridge approaches and the I-64, I-65, and I-71 interchanges south of the bridges. This new interchange will dramatically increase the amount of traffic that can cross the river at this point. In addition North of the bridges several interchanges will be reconstructed with a through and local lanes configuration, separating exiting traffic from the interstate. The new northbound span will handle all northbound traffic, while the existing span will be reconfigured to handle all southbound traffic.
This freeway route is vital to the Indiana's Infrastructure and important for interstate commerce throughout the midwest. With Indiana being known as the "Crossroads of America" several major interstates cross the state. Interstate 65 is one of the most important. Locally it links Indianapolis to the cities of Chicago and Louisville, but it also links to wisconsin, Michigan, Kentucky Tennessee, and the south. In addition it also links to many other highways that serve the entire country (I-64, I-69, I-70, I-74, I-80, I-90, and I-94) This makes this highway extremely busy and extremely important.
This collection of projects is vital to increasing the traffic volume that can travel through the State and the midwest. Reducing travel and commute times and increasing safety are the major goala for these projects. Indiana continues to grow as the surrounding states do as well, and congestion will continue to increase. These projects nad additional future improvements are needed to bring the highway up to par with the demand that it carries.
VISIONS FOR INTERSTATE 65
- This freeway should be widened to 6 lanes minimum throughout the state of Indiana.
- All pavement should be replaced with high endurance Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) to maximize life. Harsh winter weather and traction control devices cause a great deal of damage to the roadway surface.
- Interchance ramps should be modified to allow traffic to decelrate after they have exited the freeway. Deceleration on the main lanes causes delays and can contribute to accidents.
- Dotted lane markings should be used to delineate thse lanes that are exiting the freeway (exit only lanes). This is being done in a number of states and helps people distinguish auxiliary lanes from the main through lanes.
- Northwest Indiana - Widen to minimum of 8 lanes north of SR-2
- Indianapolis - Widen to minimum of 6 lanes from I-465- to I-865 on the northwest side.
- Indianapolis - Widen to minimum of 8 lanes from I-465 (northwest side) to downtown.
- Indianapolis-Greenwood- Widen to minimum of 10 lanes from I-465 (south side) to County Line Rd and 8-Lanes to Whiteland Rd.
